No search engines in firefox

Postby Fargo » 25 Dec 2014 23:01

I'm at my parents for Christmas and working on my moms computer, I just realized that Firefox has no search engines. Not only that but I have been unable to install any. I go to the searchbar on the right and click on the down arrow where the search engines should be and there is nothing there. I click on 'Manage Search Engines' and there is nothing in the list. I am unable to add any either.

I have tried to add a new profile but that did not help. I even did a complete removal of firefox and manually removed the firefox folder before doing a fresh install. Even with a completely new install I do not have any search engines. Please help.

Did you try google? As haven't heard of that one before.

I actually do have the search engines there but can not see them.
I have found that I have to write something in the search box and highlight it and only then will clicking on that tiny down arrow show them, so I can choose which one to run. Very annoying.

Yep clicking on magnifying glass icon and selecting search settings. Should bring up the list of search engines.

Start typing should bring up a selection to choose as alternative for searches.

Yep as search has changed in Firefox 34.0.5 don't know when it was implemented before that version beginning of 34?
And as you can see I have "Provide Search suggestions" unchecked and still getting them anyways.

Interesting, I don't even have a tab for search in my preferences section. Something is just not installed properly and I have uninstalled/reinstalled twice.

Also I have noticed I can't open a link in a new tab or a new window.

Well it is Firefox 34.0.5 in Netrunner. Hoping SolydXK is still up to date with Firefox?

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy firefox
sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude -s dist-upgrade
fist of all, please give us the result of these commands.

the search tab only exist on firefox 34.0.5. if you're on older firefox you can get that option by clicking the tiny arrow on search bar then select manages search engines. there's also trick to use address bar for googling stuffs. first of all, type 'about:config' on address bar then press enter. search for "keyword.URL'" then change the content into "https://www.google.com/search?q=". in that way you can directly use address bar to search something on google. other search engine also works in same way.

Yeah thats the problem. That doesn't work. THere are no search engines listed and if I click 'manage search engines' nothing happens. Its weird.

it could be a bug in solydxk's firefox-esr. iceweasel and firefox seems doesn't have this issue. the easiest way to fix it would be replace firefox-esr with firefox or iceweasel.

I wondered about that too, but I just updated to firefox 31 from the previous version because it did not work. I thought the update would fix it. But it didn't so I'm inclined to think something else got messed up somewhere. There have been 9 grandkids playing on the machine over the weekend so it wouldn't surprise me if they messed something up. But even a fresh install didn't fix it.

I'll try the non esr version to see what it does. I'll post back soon.

I updated to 34.05 and it did not have search engines either. However, I was able to add a couple. So at least now it has a search engine. So I'll leave it at this. Thanks for the help guys.

I could be missing something here, because I always use firefox-esr and not the new ones. But. One of the things I do when configuring Firefox in a new install is to remove firefox-solydxk-adjustments, because I have no need for the included add-ons. Unfortunately this also removes search engines.

I have never had any trouble going to Mycroft Project and re-adding search engines from there.

The first thing I do is search for "google year". The tested ones have check marks by them. Just click the one you want, and click ok, and it's added.

BTW, it was Orb who told me about searching for "google year" on Mycroft way back in the dim past... :)

My soldyxk-adjustments were not installed. Maybe that was the issue. I assumed they didn't apply to the esr. But I was also unable to install any search engines. I'm back home now and won't have access to the machine again for a few months. So it will have to remain as I left it. Maybe by the time I get to it again, I can install the new 'Jessie' based Solyd on it. Thanks for all the timely help. I was glad the forum had helpful people available when I needed it.
