No AMD drivers in Testing

Postby mhwelsh » 10 Feb 2017 16:32

The present testing repositories will not supply AMD drivers.

Code: Select all

root@fitpc3 martin # inxi -A -G -M
Machine: Device: laptop Mobo: CompuLab model: fit-PC3 UEFI [Legacy]: Phoenix v: SBC_2.1.0.333_14 X64 date: 01/20/2014
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Wrestler [Radeon HD 6320]
           Display Server: X.org 1.19.1 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: modesetting,fbdev,vesa)
tty size: 128x23 Advanced Data: N/A for root
Audio: Card-1 Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Wrestler HDMI Audio driver: snd_hda_intel
Card-2 Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) driver: snd_hda_intel
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.9.0-1-amd64
The above machine does not want to know. I have another machine that is a little newer which has a "Kabini Radeon HD8400E" which I have not tried.
If you want some checks I could try the second machine.

Please change your topic to something less generic with AMD in it ... "No AMD graphic drivers in testing?" for example. More people need to notice this.

Your card Tobago belongs to the much newer “Caribbean Islands” series, which is fully supported by AMDs new driver model. "Southern Islands" actually is the border, those might or might not be supported. All the older cards are definitely not supported by the new driver model and I'm not sure about the default driver.

mhwelsh has a "Northern Islands" model and reports that it is not working. I'd like to collect reports about other older cards, up until "Southern Islands".

Just to clarify: xserver-xorg-video-radeon in stretch supports older graphic cards from R100 up to Southern Islands. So the desktop should be working. Is it mhwelsh?

But there will not be proprietary drivers from AMD, which means that 3D will probably be bad. HW-accelleration should still be provided by mesa-vdpau-drivers but I'm not sure to what extent. Although I'm still struggling to understand the interaction beween the different mesa components and the underlying graphic drivers.

Also I don't know what will happen if people try to upgrade to stretch with fglrx installed. I can't test the transition because it's hardware-related and testing in a VM won't help much.

To avoid problems it would be wise to deinstall fglrx first. Maybe the transitional packages provided by SolydXK should include a warning?

no worries. 3D acceleration on older card is quite good with the open source better. in some cases it even better than the propietary driver. though, the performance level won't be as good as newer cards due to generation and technology gap :3

At least the following packages are installed;
xserver-xorg-video-radeon
libdrm-radeon1-amd64
libdrm-radeon1-i386
xserver-xorg-video-ati
firmware-amd-graphics (For AMD and ATI graphics chips.)

The computer works. The inxi readout tells you what it is using.
The missing software is the ATI Catalyst Control Centre.

AMD ditched Catalyst so there won't be a CCC anymore. The new AMD drivers are only for cards after the Islands series:

Northern Islands ARUBA (Trinity/Richland), BARTS, TURKS, CAICOS, CAYMAN HD6450, HD6570, HD6670, HD6790 - HD6990, HD64xxM, HD67xxM, HD69xxM, HD7450 - HD7670
Southern Islands CAPE VERDE, PITCAIRN, TAHITI, OLAND, HAINAN HD7750 - HD7970, R9 270, R9-280, R7 240, R7 250
Sea Islands BONAIRE, KABINI, MULLINS, KAVERI, HAWAII HD7790, R7 260, R9 290
Volcanic Islands TONGA, ICELAND/TOPAZ, CARRIZO, FIJI, STONEY, POLARIS10, POLARIS11, POLARIS12 R9 285

All these up to Southern (which I have) won't get the new proprietary drivers but I'm still hoping for Volcanic Islands. I'd like to know what happens on your Kabini. I'm not sure DDM is already configured correctly, would be nice if you could test.

Update - I read up on this, sorry for my previous confusion:

Default is xserver-xorg-video-radeon (open) which both of you are using.

Southern, Sea and Volcanic Islands are supported by xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu (open) and AMDgpu Pro (proprieatary, firmware-amd-graphics). This means that both of your newer cards (Kabini, Tobago) could use xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu which does not need the binary blob in firmware-amd-graphics.

These drivers have to be installed and I'm not sure whether DDM is ready for this since schoelje still has work to do on KDE. Could you test what DDM offers, mhwelsh and Maybl8?

My system is working just fine. I don't want to go through a video driver issue if I don't have to.
Is there a way I can simulate the install without actually doing it so you can get the info you want?

ilu only want to know what ddm offer for your cards. I think you only need to run ddm and see what appeared in the menu.

The machine has Stable installed and in just refers to an AMD driver.
To establish what it will say with Testing involves changing the SSD.
That is why it will take a little longer.

I swapped the SDDs and I got the same result.
When the ATI drivers are called for they are not present in the repositories.

The significance of this is that if you try and carry out a straight upgrade to what is presently *ee you may finish up with no graphics.

I'm a bit confused by what you wrote but maybe I misunderstood something.

But anyway: People with older AMD cards and fglrx installed on jessie should think twice about upgrading to stretch.

People with fglrx installed need to uninstall fglrx before upgrading!
