[Solved] Problem with boot by pen drive

Postby jsvenancio » 11 Feb 2017 14:08

ENG;

Good afternoon.

I'm having problems with solydx / 64 bts and I want to format and re-install this distro.

I used Yumi to create a pen-drive to boot and install from there.

But now I have problems getting the boot from the pen, I've tried with UEFI disabled and activated, but I still do not have the boot on the pen.

Any suggestions to solve this problem?

PT;

Boa tarde.

Did you have the pen drive formatted to NTFS ?
I have SolydX 64 bit on a flash drive and have no problems

Yes, the pen was formatted in NTFS.

The only time I have had that problem is when I had a low quality flash drive .
Maybe try booting up in safe mode and installing from there ...

I test with our own usb-creator, Unetbootin and dd: https://solydxk.nl/get-support/tutorials/#usb
Often the pen drive is faulty and I always have several different pen drives to test it with.

I have never used "Yumi" so cannot comment on this utility. I much prefer the "old-school" CLI method using "dd" as described in this SolydXK Tutorial.

Code: Select all

dd if=path_to_iso of=path_to_usbstick bs=4M && sync
Note that "dd" is also known as "disk destroyer" for a reason! Please double-check your file paths before running this command!

I have never formatted a pen drive wih ntfs (always used fat32), and I have never used yumi.

Maybe try fat32 and SolydXK's USB Creator?

Eu nunca formatado um pen drive com o NTFS (usada sempre FAT32), e eu nunca utilizado yumi. Talvez tente fat32 e SolydXK's USB Creator?

Thank you for correcting me on that, I did mean to post fat 32 :oops:
That could very well be the problem if the OP formatted the pen drive to NTFS

I have used Unetbootin on other occasions without problems. I will create the pen again with the boot but this time with Unetbootin, then put here the result.

While unetbootin may work OK, this application has a history of problems with ISOs built using isohybrid techniques.

See Debian documentation "How do I write a CD/DVD/BD image to a USB flash drive?"...
Please note, that Debian advises not using unetbootin for this task. It can cause difficult-to-diagnose problems with booting and installing, so is not recommended.

For a long time I formatted pen drives wall to wall FAT32.
Some times they worked and sometimes they did not.
Gparted certainly did not like them.

Now I leave the first 5Mbits empty so partition one starts 5Mbits in.
Since then every one a winner!

linux can't read ntfs as default. it require 3rd party plugin called ntfs-3g which normally only loaded on userspace...well, let's save the boring technical explanation.

in short, don't use ntfs on pendrive if you want to make it bootable :lol"

Good evening. I used the USB CREATOR to create the pen and with that I was able to solve the problem and install SolydX. Thank you all.

Great, I'm glad you got it sorted out!
Did you install the USB Creator on a different OS?
I've never tried to do that but it should be able to install on any Debian version.

I had installed SolydX on the HD but I was having some problems with the boot, so my decision to format.

I had the SolydXK USB Creator installed but it did not work so I uninstalled this version and installed the new USB Creator version and from there I created the pen.
