Only boots up with Sysvinit
Only boots up with Sysvinit
Hey guys, I recently had a power supply failure. Now I can no longer boot into SolydK as normal. I can only get my system running if I go into the Advanced options at Grub and select Sysvinit. Then things to work OK but I don't have a shutdown option. So I can't shutdown my machine as normal either. Any ideas.

Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
I suggest you first check for broken packages. Open a terminal and enter the following three commands:
Then reboot and post the full output of the following four commands:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
Code: Select all
inxi -Frxz
apt policy systemd
apt update
apt upgrade

Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
Package "systemd-sysv" provides the manual pages and links needed for systemd to replace sysvinit. Installing systemd-sysv will overwrite /sbin/init with a link to systemd. As this package may have become corrupted, I suggest you open a terminal and reinstall this package with the following two commands:
Then reboot and post the full output of the following four commands:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --reinstall systemd systemd-sysv

Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
Very strange. Both "systemd" and "systemd-sysv" now seem to be correctly installed but inxi still shows "Init: SysVinit".
Please post the output of the following command:
If this shows the correct symlink then maybe the problem is elsewhere, such as with grub2. However, I am off to bed now so can't look at this again until tomorrow. In the meantime, if anyone else has any ideas then please jump in...

Please post the output of the following command:
Code: Select all
ls -l /sbin/init
Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
I probably know less than I think I do, but I see references to openSuse in the apt-get update return. Would love to see output from
Code: Select all
inxi -r

Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
I have no idea what inxi is, but I'm going to guess that it shows SysVinit because that is the option I had to choose in Grub to get my system to boot. When I boot with the normal SolydK entry, I end up in some emergency prompt in the command line.Zill wrote:Very strange. Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
haha. I wondered if anyone would catch that. Don't worry. I'm not installing packages made for open suse. I think I installed either a color theme or icon theme that was being hosted at opensuse. The full path to the repo you saw is this.srq2625 wrote:I probably know less than I think I do, but I see references to openSuse in the apt-get update return. Would love to see output from

My current issues came about this weekend when my power supply failed. Not sure if there is any connection or not, but I was trying out a friends 4k monitor at the time. I wonder if the 4k put enough load on the graphics processor to reveal the issue with the power supply. I also lost a back up hard drive at the same time. The drive with all my system info is an SSD. Not sure if that makes any difference or not in reguards to getting a corrupt file.
I'll be away from my machine until late tomorrow, so I won't be able to respond back right away, but I appreciate any input you all have and I'll check everything out as soon as I can tomorrow. Thank you all.

Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
personally I'd give up. debugging systemd is really pain in the a**. the complexity is too big for me. I'm assuming that you're running the stable version. if that true, I'd suggest to use sysvinit until new solydxk got released so that you can reinstall your system. meanwhile, you can use this on boot parameter to use sysvinit as you init
if you're lucky, you can update your system (after new solydxk got released) and your systemd might work again. else, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". your system functionality should remain same. it doesn't really matter what init did you use as long as it's working.
Code: Select all
init=/lib/sysvinit/init
Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
Your symlink "sbin/init" looks correct to me. As far as "inxi" is concerned, this is simply an information script that shows the current system configuration. I must admit that I thought you had run it after the system had correctly booted with systemd. However, you are correct in that it will show SysVinit if you had chosen this in grub.Fargo wrote:... It might be helpful if you can give more information about exactly what error messages are shown when you try a normal boot into SolydK.
Looking at my "/etc/default/grub" file, I have the following active lines:
Code: Select all
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -d -s 2>/dev/null || echo SolydXK`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
Would you please take a look at your file and see if you have exactly the same lines:
Code: Select all
cat /etc/default/grub
Code: Select all
sudo update-grub
If your "/etc/default/grub" is different then please advise. You could also try backing-up your existing file and then editing the current file so that it shows the same active lines I posted above. Then update grub as described, reboot and check SolydK again.
Code: Select all
sudo cp /etc/default/grub /etc/default/grub_bak
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
My grub is a little different. I find it interesting that the advanced options don't show up here. Do you see the advanced options in your grub menu when you boot your computer.
Code: Select all
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -d -s 2>/dev/null || echo SolydXK`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nosplash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
Well I made a backup and changed everything to look exactly like yours. But nothing changed. I will type below what I get when I do a normal boot.
So typed journalctl -xb to see some logs. I had a whole long page of stuff to read. A few items were in red. I figure thats not good. But the one that caught my eye the most was
I had a whole page full of that error. The last number did change a bit on each error though. Not sure what thats about but it looks like a kernel issue with my processor.
I think I may need to take the advice of kurotsugi and just boot into sysvinit until the new release and then update the system and see what happens. I'm ok to do that if you think my issue is still just a systemd issue and not something more serious.
Thanks again.
Code: Select all
Welcome to emergency mode! After logging in , type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot: to reboot, "systemctl default" to try again to boot into default mode.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue):
Code: Select all
Feb 14 21:16:47 computername kernel: AMD-VI: Event logged [ IO_PAGE_FAULT device=3:00.0 domain=0x001x address=0x0000000100010e40 flags-0x0030]

Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
Unless you really enjoy delving into the innards of systemd, I agree with kurotsugi that the most pragmatic solution is to stick with sysvinit for the time being. As long as the system will boot properly with sysvinit then which init system is used is really irrelevant. FYI, the Mint Debian Edition (LMDE2) is also based on Debian jessie but still uses sysvinit as default.Fargo wrote:... Regarding updating the system after stretch becomes the new stable, you may find it easier and more reliable to do a full reinstallation, rather than upgrading the existing system. While it is often possible to upgrade, in your particular case I understand the system was originally installed as the SolydK Business Edition, which was based on Debian Wheezy (and used sysvinit). A "clean" reinstall would ensure that any "sticky toffees" from the old systems get swept away by the new installation. Obviously, make sure you have (multiple!) good backups of your old data safely saved elsewhere so that you can restore your data to the new system.
Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
Thank you Zill for all your help. I don't think I have the skills to dig into systemd on my own any more than we have in this thread. I'd be happy to keep following your advice and trying things, but you probably have a life outside of trying to fix my computer issues.
So I don't want to waste any more of your time. But I really appreciate you trying to help me out.
I'll give the script that kurotsugi gave above a try and just use sysvinit. It seems to be working fine. (Now I have concerns about what would have happened if sysvinit wasn't there as a backup. I'm not liking systemd too much right now).
This was a fresh install a year ago and not an update of the Business Edition. I just need to change my signature on the forum. But I will likely do a fresh install once SolydK 9 is finished.

Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
Fargo: Much as I would like to help track down this problem, I really don't have a clue where systemd is concerned - and probably not with much else either!
I tend to use the "infinite number of monkeys and typewriters" approach and hope that, eventually, I will hit the right solution!
Anyway, as long as sysvinit works, don't fix it.

Re: Only boots up with Sysvinit
How do I use that code that kurotsugi provided
It seems all I really need to do is change my grub menu to made the sysvinit the default. Is that what this does? I tried to run it but I didn't sudo so it didn't do anything.
Code: Select all
init=/lib/sysvinit/init
