DDM and AMD Radeon

Postby ilu » 20 Feb 2017 20:05

Bug control: DDM should not try to install fglrx for older graphic cards (Radeon HD 2000/3000/4000 and everything below) as happened here: https://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6777.

From https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary:
"The AMD Catalyst Legacy driver - supporting the Radeon HD 2000/3000/4000 series - is not available for Debian 8 "Jessie", as upstream has not updated the driver for newer Xorg releases."
See also http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Hardware.

Future in stretch:

Evergreen and early Islands series are supported by fglrx in Jessie but in Stretch AMD ditched Catalyst, so no proprietary drivers for:
Evergreen: Cedar, Redwood, Juniper, Cypress, Hemlock HD5450 - HD5970, HD7350
Northern Islands: Aruba (Trinity/Richland), Barts, Cayman, HD6450, HD6570, HD6670, HD6790 - HD6990, HD64xxM, HD67xxM, HD69xxM
Southern Islands (TeraScale): Caicos, Turks, HD7450 - HD7670

These cards will use xserver-xorg-video-radeon.

The new proprietary AMD driver AMDgpu Pro will cover:
Southern Islands (GCN): Cape Verde, Pitcairn, Tahiti, Oland, Hainan HD7750 - HD7970, R9 270, R9-280, R7 240, R7 250
Sea Islands: Bonaire, Kabini, Mullins, Kaveri, Hawaii HD7790, R7 260, R9 290
Volcanic Islands: Tonga, Iceland/Topaz, Carrizo, Fiji, Stoney,
POLARIS10, POLARIS11, POLARIS12 R9 285

The new open driver xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu will cover Sea and Volcanic Islands acording to https://packages.debian.org/stretch/xse ... deo-amdgpu and is also in Jessie backports. Experimental support is suposed to be there for GCN-Southern Islands.

Maybe you already incorporated AMDgpu, I can't test this in a VM. If I'm not mistaken DDM needs several "trees" to deal with AMD cards - provided that the default driver picked by the Installer is always xserver-xorg-video-radeon.

1. Card is old --> no support in neither Jessie nor stretch --> out.
2. Card belongs to earlier Islands (TeraScale), up until Southern 76xx :
a. System = Jessie ---> install fglrx
b. System = Stretch ---> out
3. Card belongs to newer Islands (GCN) - Southern Islands from 77xx and Sea Islands :
a. System = Jessie ---> install fglrx, give (experimental) option to install either amdgpu or amdgpu+firmware-amd-graphics from backports
b. System = Stretch ---> give (experimental) option to install either amdgpu or amdgpu+firmware-amd-graphics
4. Card is new - Volcanic Islands and later
a. System = Jessie ---> install fglrx, give option to install either amdgpu or amdgpu+firmware-amd-graphics from backports
b. System = Stretch ---> give option to install either amdgpu or amdgpu+firmware-amd-graphics

Sorry if you already knew all this. This helped me to sort things out.

Moved to Bug control.

I'll check it out when I find some time.

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 03 Mar 2017 18:21

I've quickly scanned this and the other topic and what I read I've got to mimic all those cards (I do not own any ATI). For each I'd need some specific command output as used in /usr/bin/ddm (from line 542):

Code: Select all

lspci -n -d '1002': | awk '{print $3}' | cut -d':' -f2
lspci | grep VGA
With this information I need someone with that particular card to test the new code. Otherwise I'll just be coding blind. Anyhow, it is a time consuming change.

I'll come back to this and I'll try to provide the info needed. Of course I have only 2 cards I can test on but maybe someone else will come up with more. Otherwise you will have to code blind and wait for error reports, I'm afraid.

Re: DDM and AMD Radeon

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 28 Mar 2017 06:45

I'm afraid I cannot do anything about this bug.

There is no hardware database with which card ID is supported by which driver (as can be done with Nvidia cards). I have to read the card's description, extract the serial number and guess which driver is best suited. This is a very sloppy method which is prone to mistakes and it's also very high maintenance. I simply do not have the time to read through all the scattered information available on the net. So, if there is no way of checking the card's ID with the available driver I'm forced to drop ATI support from DDM.

I'll upload an experimental version of DDM later today with some Nvidia changes. This includes some extra checks for ATI whether we're on Jessie or Stretch. Stretch uses the default xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu driver. I haven't changed any other code regarding to this issue.

I've uploaded a new version of DDM to testing.

Add "testing" to the end of the repository.solydxk.nl line in /etc/apt/sources.list and run:

Code: Select all

apt update
apt install ddm
ddm
Attach /var/log/ddm.log and errors from the terminal (if any) in your post.

I've run a simulation with the latest DDM in testing (Jessie with backports selected) and this is the output:
ddm_output.txt
(38.54 KiB) Downloaded 82 times
It's better, of course, if somebody with an actual ATI card would test it ;)

I've got that too in Stretch. It happens at the end, after everything is installed. Will look into it.

Got it: aticonfig not found!

I've updated DDM in testing. Now wait for somebody with an ATI card to actually test it.

Does this mean it worked:

Code: Select all

dcihon@solydk64ee:~$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Tobago PRO [Radeon R7 360 / R9 360 OEM]
           Display Server: X.Org 1.19.2 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: modesetting,fbdev,vesa)
           Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz, 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD BONAIRE (DRM 2.48.0 / 4.9.0-2-amd64, LLVM 3.9.1)
           GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 13.0.5

Without the /var/log/ddm.log I cannot say anything sensible about it.

Thanks
I didn't know where the log file was located.

Seems OK. Now for somebody who is willing to give it a try on metal.

DDM updated in testing: more verbose logging, better ATI recognition and a Log button for those that have problems finding the log file ;)

The original alarm was raised because there are no AMD Radeon drivers in testing.
This is demonstrated by selecting Radeon/AMD drivers in the device driver manager and being told that there are none.
This still happens with an updated installation.

The debug action required is surely to stop the notice that there are no drivers.
