Well, I'm writing this from inside the SolydK EE 10 64-bit live system... ;)

I logged in again using the "Ctrl(+Alt)+Backspace trick" and after a considerable time (90 seconds or a multiple thereof? sounds like the usual "a start job is running..." - I do not like systemd...) the desktop appeared. There is a (/var)/run/dbus now.

Weird.

Schoelje wrote:It seems that live-config handles sha-512 generated passwords only partially: the live user logs in correctly but, as you found out, you cannot login after loging out. So, I reverted the password generation change for the live user and all functioned as expected again. I'm building new nightlies and expect to have uploaded them in about an hour or four.
I've rebuilt the 32-bit ISOs and just started uploading them. Should be done in about 30 minutes. Could you remove the 201708 versions please? They also have the sha-512 password problem.

Thanks. I've currently got a 'build batch' running for the remaining EE ISOs. If that terminates without errors, an upload batch for all four ISOs will be started, so everything should be available here some time tonight (probably before midnight CEST).
The SolydX EE live systems should boot without a hitch, but to get to the desktop of a SolydK EE you need to:

- boot the ISO and wait until the screen goes black and stays like that;
- press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace (RightCtrl+Backspace in a VirtualBox VM);
- wait until the LightDM login screen appears;
- enter the password (solydxk) and log in;
- wait for the desktop to show up.

I haven't tried to install anything yet, so no idea what fun awaits there...

All EE users/testers should be aware that packages in Debian Testing have a tendency to disappear from the repository. At the moment, some of the items from the Welcome screens are incomplete (I'll mention the missing packages in the new CiMABI thread later). There's no telling when/if this will change.

While live I checked if dbus was running:

Code: Select all

ps ax | grep dbus
solydxk   3147  0.0  0.0  12784  1028 pts/1    S+   08:39   0:00 grep --color=auto dbus
So....not!

I installed and rebooted and behold:

Code: Select all

578 ?        Ss     0:00 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --system --address=systemd: --nofork --nopidfile --systemd-activation
2186 ?        Ss     0:00 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --session --address=systemd: --nofork --nopidfile --systemd-activation
2488 ?        S      0:00 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --config-file=/usr/share/defaults/at-spi2/accessibility.conf --nofork --print-address 3
2714 ?        S      0:00 /usr/lib/cups/notifier/dbus dbus://
2769 pts/1    S+     0:00 grep --color=auto dbus
So, live there is no dbus. Is this a dbus issue, a systemd issue or is it caused by live-config?

I found that there was an update on the uBlock addon for Firefox. So, I updated firefox-solydxk-adjustments and while I was at it I did the same for thunderbird-solydxk-adjustments.

While uploading the packages to the repository I found out that thunderbird-solydxk-adjustments was missing from the repository :oops:
I think all ISOs are missing that package now...

I'm now experimenting with SolydK EE by upgrading the live packages from sid. Let's see if that does anything.

Nope....nothing!

[Edit]
Ooooh, wait...after almost 6 minutes of black screen it continued and dbus was running. What's happening here?

Ouch.
Schoelje wrote:Ooooh, wait...after almost 6 minutes of black screen it continued and dbus was running. What's happening here?
Yep, a delay of 4 to 8 minutes. Sometimes calling up the login screen (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) speeds things up. Sometimes it doesn't.

Take a look at the attached file (it's a bit big for a code block, me thinks...). Almost everything gets started properly within the first minute. Then only background stuff happens for a while. Then nothing for two minutes and then dbus-daemon finally starts kuiserver. No idea why that doesn't happen sooner.

Build-batch started because of the thunderbird-solydxk-adjustments package. Upload-batch should follow, but not all six ISOs will make it before midnight CEST.

Don't expect any changes with regard to the SolydK EE ISOs. They'll still take a ridiculous amount of time to boot... :(

I have just downloaded and put Solydk 9 32 bit on my spare machine. It all seems to work, except that the graphics are a pain.
If a menu brings up another page over itself only some of it will show. Clicking around where I think the entry needs to be, or just typing something will often (not always) make the rest of it visible.

It is probably my ancient graphics card that is the trouble.
Should I try to find another driver? Without the old DDM I'm sort of lost.... :(

According to Debian Wiki you can simply run:

Code: Select all

apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,') nvidia-driver
and restart.

But it might be prudent to first run

Code: Select all

nvidia-detect
to see if there are drivers available for your card.

I tried this but there was a notice that the legacy drivers would not work with my chipset.

I did this, and the installation of the legacy drivers was recommended.
I checked with the Debian forums and found that they work only with a 64bit system. 32 bit gives the dreaded black screen and nothing else.
As both my machines are only 32 bit it looks like Solydk9 is out for me until I can buy a new system! :(

@grizzler
Would you like me to release the 32-bit ISOs?
I also could release SolydX 9 EE and mention that SolydK 9 EE will take longer.

Not just yet. I intend to build a new set later this week (SolydX should have mugshot and pulseaudio needs to be fixed for the EEs).

I need to think about what to do about the SolydK EEs in more than one way. The kdesudo package is gone forever and I've only briefly looked at the alternative (kdesu, provided by kde-cli-tools). The way this is called seems to be messy (no /usr/bin/kdesu but something in /usr/lib).

Patzy: I don't know anything about nvidia but my old AMD cards all work with the free radeon drivers. I just bought a similar old AMD card for a spare parts system for just 5 EUR. You don't seem to care about fancy graphics so why bother with proprietary drivers?

nvidia user doesn't have much option other than using the propietary driver because noveau is more or less broken. someone ever said to me, the propietary driver is the best graphic driver in linux realm. thats probably why, most people never bothered using noveau...which in turn, made noveau development stagnated.

btw, @patzy how about the onboard graphic chips?

Good point! I think I might as well pull the nvidia card.

And if there is no onboard graphics, any cheap AMD card will do.

Just started the upload of the 32-bit and SolydX EE ISOs. They should be available here shortly after 21:00 CEST (the first two will probably be an hour earlier).
Not really tested but at least the live system booted...

The SolydK EEs will tale a bit more work.

Just started the upload of the SolydK EE ISOs.

They're still not as good as I would like them to be, but the 64-bit one only took two minutes to boot, so there seems to be some progress... :roll:

I had to replace solydk-system-adjustments-10 and rootactions-servicemenu with self built versions, because the dependency on kdesudo had to go (package is gone and won't be back). I've given the adjustments package the version number 2.8.11~b1, which is lower than 2.8.11, so that number can be used for the next official version from the repository.

The rootactions-servicemenu version number is a bit of a mess. The package in the repository has a 'native' number, but this is not a native package (there is an upstream and even though you have to do a major rewrite of the source tarball, it's still not a native source package). The version on the ISOs is 2.9.1.0-0dspk2 (should have been 2.9.1-0dspk2, but that's not higher than 2.9.1xk1...), which is a follow up to my previous build, 2.9.1-0dspk1. They're both based on the 2.9.1 source (2.9.2 hasn't appeared yet, though the web page seems to suggest - to me at least - Kubicle is working on it).

Edit
Annnnnnd.. I just noticed the kdesu binary on the PATH has indeed not been set up. I had planned to check that first and then build the ISOs.
Ah well... Next set some time tomorrow.
