Random SolydX freezes [CLOSED, NOT SOLVED]

Postby amnesix » 28 Apr 2019 12:17

I would like to try to install a 4.8 kernel in my SolydX 9. Is it possible, and how ?

Thanks in advance...

It might be possible but why would you want that? 4.8 doesn't get security updates, so it's a bad idea. I'm almost sure that kernel downgrading is not the correct solution to whatever problem you have. Tell us your problem.

I'm actually running a 4.20 5.0 kernel on my stretch system. Now if you wanted to do that I'd understand.

Actually, I don't know what I want. I don't know anymore.

My problem started as told in this thread : viewtopic.php?f=7&t=7486

The problem I described was away, but I came back with a revenge. Now this machine can't run more than a few hours, and then it freezes. As I have music playing on that machine, I can hear it crashing : it begins to play a few seconds in a loop. And when that happens, I don't have any control anymore, no keyboard, no mouse. Only the «reset» button.

I have tried about everything I could think about, including :

I changed my «Jukebox, from my beloved Quodlibet to Clementine, or even vlc
I killed all my «tools»(glipper, solaar. tomboy etc.
I killed my VPN (airVPN)

No change.

Then I tried to check the logs (syslog, message) : there was no common event. The last line for the reboot could last for as much as 15 minutes before the log showed the restart. Only one time (also two crashes) had a common event before the restart : «run parts» launched by cron. But it was more than 10 minutes before the restart (I restart as soon as I hear the crash)

I tried to play with things like vm.swappiness and the like.

The worst : The machine crashed even one time as it was running the live-DVD, and it was playing music from the internet.

So I am totally out of my depth, and I try the craziest things, like add to my sources.list «Jessie», and I installed a kernel 3.16 (because earlier, I had no problem with this machine)... no success.

Again, I am totally out my depth. Can I think it a hardware problem ? I actually don't think : my problems started exactly the day switched from MX-17 to SolydX 9. And I have been a few days without crashes. I have reinstalled the system at least 6 times. Sometimes I deleted even my /home to make a real fresh start.

instead of going down...it's better to goes up. you can add liquorix or other 3rd party repo and add the new kernel from there. since you also have nvidia, you can also try to install the official driver. I can't guarantee that it will solve your problem but at least we can reduce a factor with a benefit of better performance

The problem in your other thread was caused by a screensaver setting which you solved by reinstalling and configuring it. So far so good.
Now another problem started, the machine stutters and freezes. Please post the output of inxi -Fxz and cat /etc/fstab.

Long reboot times indicate that the system feels the need to thoroughly check every harddisk. From your description I'd normally think hardware. Does anything feel hot?

Have you ever used a system monitor? There's an applet for the panel or - better - you use htop. Leave it open and have a look at whats happening. Open another terminal window and enter journalctl -f. Adjust the window sizes and have a look as soon as the stutters begin. I'm suggesting this rather strange way because at least on my system the journal is not persistent so I can't access the logs of a previous boot with journalctl. Fixing this is a bit complicated because of the way SolydX is set up, we might need to discuss this separately.

Don't install any drivers just now, you don't need graphic performance for music. Or do you think the free driver for nVidia is THAT completely broken, kurotsugi?

the sympton is pointing to bad graphic driver. he is using an old intel chip so I'm almost sure that it is not the mysterious bug which haunted new intel chips.
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2395988
https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... s-freezing
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/nouveau-cau ... eeze/37465
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topi ... eze-issue/
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99900

the latest noveau freeze is jan 1, 2019 so it's still relevant with this issue. you can try to use "nouveau.modeset=0" or "nouveau.modeset=1". 0 will disable modesetting for noveau while 1 will force modesetting for noveau. though, I still think that it's lot better using the propietary driver. there's also a suggestion to use "nouveau.noaccel=1". else, If you prefer the nouveau drivers for Free Software reasons, you can always keep trying every few kernel versions until you get a nouveau release that works for you
Don't install any drivers just now, you don't need graphic performance for music. Or do you think the free driver for nVidia is THAT completely broken, kurotsugi?
desktop freezing means something is broken either in the kernel or the graphic driver. since we can't do much with the kernel, our next (and probably last) option is the graphic driver. I'm not saying that we shouldn't use noveau but in this case our options are limited. I recommended the propietary driver mainly for stability. the performance gain is a bonus :3

Can you get a console after freeze with <ctrl><alt><F1>? In that case you could login and view journalctl from there.

If not: I was asking for fstab to see if you could get persistent logging to work. Since your fstab doesn't use tmpfs you can activate persistent logging in the conf. Afterwards you can view the log of the previous boot with journalctl -b -1.

Code: Select all

sudo mkdir /var/log/journal
sudo nano /etc/systemd/journald.conf

[Journal]
Storage=auto
Compress=yes
#Seal=yes
#SplitMode=uid
#SyncIntervalSec=5m
#RateLimitIntervalSec=30s
#RateLimitBurst=1000
SystemMaxUse=500M
SystemKeepFree=27G
Set SystemKeepFree to a value equal or bigger to what's actually free on your partition (that's to mitigate a non-bug strange behavior).

I just did this myself so I haven't tried it up to now. Even if you don't gain anything from this it might at least be educative. :geek:

I was watching the fascinating spectacle that journalctl -f is. And this time I didn't to wait long for the next crash. As it happens, I had decided to write the most «remarkable» events that I could see from this journal.

The last three entries were :

Code: Select all

Apr 30 07:30:32 linolivier kernel: perf: interrupt took too long (2513 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 79500

Apr 30 07:39:17 linolivier kernel: perf: interrupt took too long (3146 > 3141), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 63500

Apr 30 07:47:30 linolivier kernel: perf: interrupt took too long (3939 > 3932), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50750l
After that, since I was writing (actually writing this very post), the first symptom was : my keyboard died. Then I looked at my conky, which have configured for it to show me the 4 most active processes, and it was frozen, but the music was still playing. Then I took my mouse, and I could see the cursor moving, and finally the cursor froze, and then the music «froze» into a loop.

The crash happened at 07:57

The whole from the loss of keyboard to the music freeze took about 10 seconds.

I'll with back with the integrality from the journal 'til the next crash.

I did as you told. Ilu. I thank you for the time you use for me.

I have made a try (earlier, using Mint-Xcfe), and I had the proprietary NVDIA driver : it crashed the same way.

So should I now install the NVDIA driver ?

I was trying to get the last log messages before crashing. journalctl -b -1 gets the log of the last boot but the log you posted doesn't look like a crash? And it jumps around in time? And ends on updating? Try to get the last about 50 lines before the crash and try to get the whole - very long - lines by directing the output into a file. journalctl -b -2 would count backwards another boot, adjust the number.

Code: Select all

journalctl -b -2 > logfile.txt
"perf: interrupt took too long ..., lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate" are indicating higher system loads which the kernel scheduler should sort out on its own. perf is not the cause of the problem - the kernel is too busy so it reduces monitoring frequency. So what process keeps the kernel that busy? Open a terminal window and enter sudo top and watch it during a crash - busiest process should be on top. Your conky is too slow.

Keyboard dying first wouldn't make me look for graphic driver problems first, but what do I know ... I don't have any experience with nVidia so if you don't mind their unfree drivers, go ahead.

So regarding your logfile: System crashed at May 02 09:17:02 ? If yes there is absolutely nothing to be seen.

And I've deleted your logfile, doesn't need to stay public.

I've tried everything, its contrary, and the rest. I have decided to buy a new machine. This was 12 years old, and it was its time

*Thank you* for your tips and your time. I've learned from that, at least ...
