kalarm not working in solydk stretch

Postby UncleSam » 30 May 2019 14:38

Hi,
Last week I got a new hard drive because my old one died. I reinstalled solydk_9_64_201902.iso to /dev/sdb. This is on a 64-bit AMD CPU.

When I tried to run kalarm from the K icon, nothing appeared.
However, a quick Konsole check revealed the process to be running in the background:

Code: Select all

user@solydxk1:~/linux$ ps -A | grep alarm
 2294 ?        00:00:00 kalarm
So I pkilled this process and tried again to start kalarm.
A gray Kalarm viewport appeared displaying the message,
"The Akonadi personal information management service is not operational.",
with a Details.... button.

However nothing appeared when I clicked the button.
I have no idea what this message means. I just know that in the past I used kalarm
on other linux OS's (but not in solydk jessie).

Can this be fixed? Does anybody know another application that would do the
same thing as Kalarm (sound an alarm and display a text message on a pre-specified
date and time when the OS discovers that the computer's current date and time
is equal to or greater than the date/time of an alarm that had been specified beforehand
in Kalarm) ? Or a bash script? I don't know how to make the alarm sound in BASH.

Everything else in solydK seems to be working fine. BTW, kalarm did not work for
me in my previous solydK jessie OS either.

Internet search for the error message turned up these posts: https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... on-managem and https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=264682 and many others. There might be a directory missing. I can't test any of the proposed solutions because I don't have KDE.

The Mint forum posting tells you to delete files - be careful if you have data in those directories - better backup. But even with the proposed fixes there are reports that kalarm is broken.

Thank you for your two suggestions, ilu. I tried both.
Both failed. So I removed kalarm. I conclude that kalarm does NOT work w/ KDE.
Should I also remove the packages that the first webpage suggested,
akonadi-server kdepim-runtime kmail knotes kontact korganizer ?
I guess that I should remove these packages as well ?

NO! Did they suggest to remove akonadi-server? I'm not really up-to-date with KDE plasma but akonadi-server used to be a core component in KDE.
Edit: They said to remove and reinstall akonadi-server and everything that gets removed with it. That's worth a try. Did you check that directory - is it there?

Code: Select all

ls ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/

if it doesn't exist:

cd ~/.local/share/akonadi/
mkdir db_data

Thank you, ilu, for your reply. Yes, those two subdirectories are still there but both are empty.
Here is a current (June 1st) list:

Code: Select all

sam@solydxk1:~/.local/share/akonadi$ ls -Fdltr *
drwxr-xr-x 2 sam sam 4096 May 31 11:37 db_misc/
drwxr-xr-x 2 sam sam 4096 May 31 11:37 file_db_data/
drwxr-xr-x 2 sam sam 4096 May 31 11:37 db_data/
-rw-r--r-- 1 sam sam 148 Jun  1 08:55 akonadiserver.error.old
lrwxrwxrwx 1 sam sam   26 Jun  1 11:59 socket-solydxk1 -> /tmp/akonadi-sam.MKNO0O/
-rw-r--r-- 1 sam sam 148 Jun  1 11:59 akonadiserver.error
sam@solydxk1:~/.local/share/akonadi$ ls -Fdltr db_data/* db_misc/* file_db_data/*
ls: cannot access 'db_data/*': No such file or directory
ls: cannot access 'db_misc/*': No such file or directory
ls: cannot access 'file_db_data/*': No such file or directory
On May 31, 2019, I did this:
# apt-get remove --purge akonadi-server

and then this:

Code: Select all

$ rm ~/.local/share/akonadi/*
rm: cannot remove '/home/user/.local/share/akonadi/db_data': Is a directory
rm: cannot remove '/home/user/.local/share/akonadi/db_misc': Is a directory
$ rm ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/*
rm: cannot remove '/home/user/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/*': No such file or directory
$ rm ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_misc/*
rm: cannot remove '/home/sam/.local/share/akonadi/db_misc/*': No such file or directory
$ rmdir ~/.local/share/akonadi
rmdir: failed to remove '/home/sam/.local/share/akonadi': Directory not empty
$ rm ~/.local/share/akonadi/*
rm: cannot remove '/home/sam/.local/share/akonadi/db_data': Is a directory
rm: cannot remove '/home/sam/.local/share/akonadi/db_misc': Is a directory
$ rmdir ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data
$ rmdir ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_misc
$ rmdir ~/.local/share/akonadi
Then I reinstalled it like so:
# apt-get install akonadi-server kdepim-runtime kmail knotes kontact korganizer

and then, finally, because
$ which kalarm
/usr/bin/kalarm

showed kalarm was installed but kalarm again FAILED as before when I tried to run it,
I removed it like so:
# apt-get remove kalarm
No sense in keeping application software that doesn't work.

I saved the outputs of all these commands! Let me know if you want me to post
any of them.

I will not change any other packages pertaining to akonadi-server or the other packages
listed above.
