SolydXK 10 Testing [updated: 31-07-2019]
Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
USB-creator has always been a great tool for multiboot. I've had no problems using it for the EE ISOs. I haven't had time to test it with the new ISO though. Writing the stick some times hangs as troypulk said but a repair run fixes everything. At least don't remove it from the repo.
Edit: Never problems with booting from USB-Creator with EFI or without.
Do you have any recommendation what to use instead of USB-creator? The one from mint? One stick for every image is absolutely no alternative given the usual size of pen drives today. And I would hate going back to burning DVDs.

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
I think the whole issue with the USB-Creator is that it only works right when you're using a Legacy BIOS/Hardware, it has worked for me now twice with no issues.
I'll be saving the Solydx_10_64_201905.iso so I won't lose it.

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
SolydX ISO installed without issues in VM - no EFI.
Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
Setting up L2TP with IPsec for the second time.
I did this in SolydX 8 with no problems now that I'm doing it on SolydX 10 nightly I can't seem to get it to work this time.
Any idea why it's not working?
I'm thinking to go back to a non nightly maybe solydxee_10_64_201902 and keep going back until it works.
I followed these instructions.

I followed these instructions.
Install network-manager-l2tp:
install network-manager-l2tp-gnome
Navigate to Settings > Network > Click the + button > Select "Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)"
Name the new VPN connection something
Put the host name or address in the Gateway field.
Put username in the Username field.
Click the icon in the Password field and select your preference for how to supply the password.
Click IPSec Settings...
Click the box for "Enable IPsec tunnel to L2TP host"
Enter the shared secret into the Pre-shared key field.
Leave the Gateway ID field empty. (I did this with and with out the IP address)
Expand the Advanced options area
Enter "3des-sha1-modp1024" into the Phase 1 Algorithms box.
Enter "3des-sha1" into the Phase 2 Algorithms box.
Leave the box checked for "Enforce UDP encapsulation". (I did this as checked and unchecked)
Click OK.
Click Save.
Open a terminal and enter the following commands to permanently disable the xl2tpd service: (Some times I did this and sometimes not)
sudo service xl2tpd stop
sudo systemctl disable xl2tpd
Open Network Settings and try to turn the VPN on.

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
There's a report about annoyances here: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=7549.
Regarding swap: Laptops with hibernate need swapsize = ramsize even if they have 64GB of RAM but every other computer with ramsize >= 16GB probably needs no swap at all. Just a thought. And ZRAM was brought up again.
Regarding panel: 100% should be the default on SolydX because that's the conservative setting people are expecting and used to. It's really easy to shorten it later. mhwelsh did not manage to get the short one to 100% later. Maybe don't change defaults if everybody likes them?
No idea why he had problems with SolydK as a single system. But maybe somebody could test that again?

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
I try to run the Solydk iso in Virtualbox.
It boots, and writes a lot of the boot sequence, but after writing something about the color profiles (I think with OK) the screen turns black and nothing happens.

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
Is it planned a restyling (background, theme, icons, etc.) for solydxk 10 in comparison with solydxk 9?

No, there are too many technical issues that need to be resolved and changing the design takes a lot of time.
However, I'm open to suggestions and volunteers

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
I completed the attached test sheet with the Solydx install from my last post.
I'm unable to change my user icon. The error: Failed to execute child process "mugshot" (No such file or directory). Mugshot is not installed or available in Synaptic.
Overall the system works great.

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
In the package updater icon in the tool bar there is an option to install when you click on it.
It says in the preferences "Command for installing updates"
What would that command be?
I'm guessing it's not apt-get install or is it?
Thanks

@tek10
For the time being, I've uploaded mugshot from sid to our repostory. I haven't tested it, though.
@troypulk
Is the updater not functioning without?

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
I just installed on an older computer, non EFI. Both HDDs were empty to start with. Boot stick was created with USB creator - as usual install on the stick hang and I had to do a repair run on the stick. Bootup went without problem (after convincing the mainboard to see the stick).
1. background image did not adapt to 15" monitor
2. Window where the user name had to be entered, jumped in between fullscreen and normal whenever I entered the letter "f" - which is confusing if the username or password has many f's. It's also generally weird.
3. Automatic partitioning set root size to 15 GB on a 250GB HDD which is a bit small to my liking
4. Also automated partitioning created 3 partitions on the second HDD, among them a second swap, that insisted on being mounted. I had to manually change the type to stop that.

There are several sizes backgrounds in /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops but I don't know how to force Xfce (I assume you tested SolydX10) to pick the right one.
I had to search in some very ancient source but I found it and removed the code. Next version needs more changes and testing, though.
How much would be better?
That really shouldn't happen. It has probably never been tested with more than one disk.
So, what to do with the second disk then? Nothing (safest)? Format and mount? Format but do not mount?
Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
Root size: After using stretch for 2 years I ended up with about 13 GB. Jessie was only 10 GB. And I'm never installing recommends. So there seems to be a slight upwards tendency. Running out of space on root is bad and modern disks are reasonably big, so I'd think 20 or 30 GB maybe?
The 2nd HDD ended up as a perfect mirror of the first one which doesn't make sense: Either asume the second disk is one big data sink or do nothing and give a hint ("Use manual partitioning") or ask. Do nothing is probably easiest. Hint and possibility to partition and mount manually.

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
Correct but it's an older version = SolydX EE 10 May 2019 and I just realized I should of asked this in a different thread.
This is the topic I asked at the beginning of this thread so I installed it on my laptop and it worked okay but I had to downgrade to get the L2TP with IPsec to work.
So right now I'm just looking for the command line for the updater icon so I can click it to install software.
Thanks

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
I'm seeing the same issue with the update indicator on a May image VM. Missing conf file maybe? Can't check the June image install at the moment.
Edit: Right, nothing under ~/.config/package-update-indicator/, May image install. A skel file is also missing.

Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
We never needed one. I don't have much time to figure out how to configure that. So, if somebody has the time to check that out, I'd very much appreciate that.
Re: SolydXK 10 Preview and Testing
I'll look into it. Here's an unsolved post about the problem https://debianforum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=172036.
The developer has deprecated pk-update-icon in favor of his new project package-update-indicator. Actually pk-update-icon in buster is now only a dummy package for package-update-indicator.
From upstream https://code.guido-berhoerster.org/proj ... indicator/ I can gather that the "Update installer command" needs to be set. Setting "gpk-update-viewer" will create the conf file but still doesn't work.
Don't know whether this helps:
Edit: After testing again the preference setting worked: gpk-update-viewer @Arjen
~/.config/package-update-indicator/package-update-indicator.conf

See SolydX package check here: viewtopic.php?f=78&t=7567&p=70396#p70396
And please don't forget to add the ~/.config/package-update-indicator/package-update-indicator.conf for the update icon, I've edited my previous post.
