Games on SolydX

Postby jsvenancio » 15 Feb 2020 12:33

Good afternoon.

I use SolydX (64bits) in dual boot with windows 8.1. The main reason for still using windows is due to games.

I create this topic to find out if you know any suggestions that you can propose to me to be able to play some specific games in the SolydX distro (64bits) and if it is possible to continue to enjoy all the resources that the games offer.

I will list the games, later I will be able to update the list;
- GTA V
- The Witcher
- Counter Strike (any of them)
- Assassin's Creed (any of them)
- Minecraft

I am determined to abandon windows but before I have to find some solutions/alternatives.

Every help is welcome.
SolydX - 64bts - Debian

Sorry for my bad English, I speak Portuguese and use the Google translator.

Minecraft has always had a java client for Linux. Nowadays Microsoft even provides a .deb file.

For the other games you'll have to investigate
- wine with lutris.net (they have GTA V),
- steam linux client with proton,
- steam windows client under wine
- steam windows client under wine via lutris.net

It's not simple but it's doable, depending on the game. Linux gaming has come a long way. Your graphic card needs to support dxvk though, otherwise don't even start with anything except Minecraft. And you need SolydX10.

GTA V and all other games are original from Steam or other applications. I have SolydX 10 64bit and my graphics card is from Nvidia.
Regarding Minecraft, which is also original, I will look on the official website for a solution.

On the official website there is a Minecraft version for linux, I downloaded a ".tar.gz" file.

However, I just found the ".deb" version on the same website.

Code: Select all

That's what I said.

I would try the tar.gz file first. Reason: .deb files affect the system as a whole and might overwrite important libraries. So extract the .deb file first and look at what it contains. (I had a quick look and it seems to contain only minecraft-related files.)

Good afternoon.

I downloaded the Minecraft game for linux from the official website, file ".deb". I tried to do the installation as shown below, it seems that dependencies are missing for it to work.

Before installing the dependencies, I would like to know your opinion if those dependencies are not going to create any software breaks for me.

I appreciate any suggestions.

Code: Select all

Minecraft needs Java, so installing openjdk-11-jre is a necessity. It seems that Minecraft expects gnome on your system, but there is no problem with installing gconf-service. libpango is also fairly standard. Just install those packages and retry.

Not on SolydX but SolydK 11:

Kernel: 5.7.0-1-amd64
Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H
Memory: 32GB, DDR4
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GT 1030, 2GB, Silent, LP (low profile)
Drivers: proprietary Nvidia driver 450.57
Steam Play with Proton 5.0-9

Running Doom Eternal, low settings with 20 - 40 fps.

SolydXK needs you!
