Code: Select all

 options snd-hda-intel model=auto

to the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (this is the method suggested by slackware)

was a tip from cwwgateway in an other topic that did the tric for me, everything works fine now :)
It's not the software that's free; it's you.

I'm glad it worked :D . If anyone's curious, the page is here: http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:hardware:audio_and_snd-hda-intel.

Edit: Ubuntu has a long list of options here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1043568.

This also worked for me :D

Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.24

I wonder if this works for the other people who have been having audio problems? So far we've come up with three different solutions, the one here, one here: http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=92#p873, and one here: http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=22&p=177&hilit=modprobe#p176.

at least for this similar cards is always one of the options we should consider

Code: Select all

zerozero@solydk ~ $ inxi -Ax
Audio:     Card: Intel 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller
           driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:1b.0
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ver: k3.7.0-9.dmz.2-liquorix-amd64

sometimes the problem is going to find the right combination: generic and auto look like the most common but for example wizard had to change to a specific laptop model model=asus-laptop

@zerozero/cwwgateway
Could you collect these solutions with the specific hardware in a separate thread?

I think this is something to include in the next Device Driver Manager.

Would you like some of the data from Ubuntu in the thread? Maybe a link would be good; they have a very large database of options.

Edit: I don't know if I ever posted this, but here's my sound card info:

Code: Select all

christopher@chris-laptop-kde ~ $ inxi -Ax
Audio:     Card Intel 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller driver snd_hda_intel BusID: 00:1b.0

I tried model=auto and it also works for me, I've always used model=asus-laptop by habit as it's recommended for my laptop model (French list here: http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/audio_intel_hda).
auto seems to be better than generic

For the audio_intel_hda there is this link
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. ... _Intel_HDA

and most importantly, this one
http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-ker ... xt;hb=HEAD

I have the infamous ALC892 chip and thanks to those links, it works fine now. I used the ALC880 settings to set model name ( in particular "model=3stack-digout"), but that depends on your exact hardware configuration, meaning the exact number and type of output/input jacks. It is also important to run alsamixer in the terminal after changing the model name ( and rebooting) and increase the volume of the outputs/inputs you are using ( usually they are set to zero by default, resulting in no sound)

The setting model=auto reads the BIOS setup while model=generic is , well, a generic configuration that may or may not work. From my experience, setting the correct model name works the best, followed by model=auto and then model=generic if the previous two options fail.

What is your sound card (output of inxi -Ax)? I'm making a database of solutions right now, so it would help to have everybody's sound cards logged.

That would greatly help me to build a solution in DDM! :geek:

in my system with MB Asus p8h77-m (onboard audio device Realtek ALC887) sound works whit the line "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" or the line "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" in etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Ok, on my laptop with SolydK i had to add the options snd-hda-intel model=auto line to let the soundcard work properly because the sound was coming through the speakers of the laptop and my headphones at the same time.
I knew exactly what to do and what to add to the alsa-base.conf file because this wasn't the first time i encountered this issue.
Problem was solved with 3 minutes.

But however i have SolydX on the netbook and never had any problems since the last 4 years on that little machine and it's soundcard, so i was a bit surprized when i got no sound at all with SolydX.
So i went on playing around with the sound setting but still no result. After reading this topic i did the same as with the laptop alsa-base.conf and added options snd-hda-intel model=auto to it. That did the trick and got the sound working.

Still i find it a bit strange because i've been using various Debian based, even Debian Squeeze + Wheezy (testing) and other distro's on the Acer netbook without problems. The sound always worked ootb.

Of course i'm still enjoying SolydX/K but it makes me ponder on what it might be that the sound or soundcards don't work properly ootb.

The laptop is a Medion Akoya MD96640 from 2008 and the soundcard is:

Code: Select all

Audio:     Card Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller driver snd_hda_intel BusID: 00:1b.0
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.24

The netbook is a Acer Aspire One 150 ZG5 and has this soundcard:

Code: Select all

Audio:     Card Intel NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller driver snd_hda_intel BusID: 00:1b.0
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.24

Code: Select all

Audio:     Card: Intel Panther Point High Definition Audio Controller driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:1b.0
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ver: 1.0.24

My only issue is the speakers do not mute when I plug in earphone jacks.

hi fbr,

Not even with adding snd-hda-intel model=auto to the alsa-base.conf file and rebooting after saving the file?

Mr. B, I believe the problem many users are having relates to the default model=generic setting in alsa-base.conf. When the decision was made (with the first ISO release), there were relatively few testers and IIRC zerozero's audio only worked with model=generic. Subsequently people have have been having problems with audio. I believe most distros either leave it blank (which may default to model=auto or something similar, but this is just a guess) or use model=auto. I believe Schoelje may add sound cards to DDM, but currently it requires manual intervention. I don't know what the default setting on the next ISO will be, though.

I'll add your sound card to the database now (well really in a couple of minutes, but almost now).

i would just add here that i'm seeing also a few reports of sound problems in the latest lmde respin (actually nothing new really, we had in the past problems with pulse/alsa and lately reports with settings in alsa-base.conf)
maybe this is an inherited issue.

Thanks for the explanation cwwgateway and for adding the cards to the database. I appreciate it a lot. ;)

As i kinda said, it's no problem for me to dive into things and add a line to a file. In fact i've been doing that on and off since 2008 with the laptop on some distro's but you know... i kinda love it and it shows you the power of Linux to fix such a small thing as with the soundcards for example. I know it doesn't always work and there are many different soundcards out there but i'm glad some of us can solve the problem and enjoy the distro they use. :)

By the way... Do we have a emoticon/smiley with a 'I love SolydX/K' sign holding up somewhere? I could use one right now. ;)

True, i've seen some of the reports too. I don't know for sure that this might be a inherited issue because the latest lmde respins worked fine and played nice with the soundcards on my end.

But i have to say that this issue has been going on and off since 2008 when i was a Ubuntu user up to the point when Unity popped up. One cycle all was fine and with the other cycle i had to configure the alsa-base.conf file. This also affected the ubuntu based Mint editions. The last one that had the same problem was Mint 13 but somehow it got fixed due a update i guess before i actually switched back to lmde.
