GTK module of System Settings won't show user icons?

Postby TeaSwigger » 16 Sep 2014 08:01

Wanting to free some space in my OS partition, I moved the load of icons I'd collected (leaving the icons SolydK installs by default alone) from /usr/share/icons to ~/me/.kde/share/icons in my larger home partition (this is the same location that the icons setting manager in System Settings will install to if you use the "get more icons" feature). KDE's icon settings manager works perfectly. But in GTK settings, to set what icons GTK apps use, the icons in ~/me/.kde/share/icons aren't showing! Seems it's only looking in /usr/share/icons, not the user path. How can we fix this?

Tangentally, I wonder why the GTK settings thingy doesn't just use the same list KDE's icons manager creates? Seems that would fix it and eliminate redundant search time that can cause a lag if the user has a lot of icons.

Found a work-around.

For locally installed (by/for your user, not installed in /usr/share/icons) icons to be consistent across KDE and GTK apps, I've had to:

- install the icon theme in ~/.icons
- also symlink the top folder of each icon theme in ~/.icons to ~/.kde/share/.icons

Then I can:
- select the desired icon theme for KDE apps in System Settings > Application Appearance > Icons
- also select the desired icon theme for GTK apps in System Settings > Application Appearance > Icons > GTK

If the icons were just installed in ~/.kde/share/.icons, the GTK theme manager ("kde-config-gtk-style" in SolydK, btw) didn't find them. If I reversed the above and installed the icons in ~/.kde/share/.icons and symlinked to ~/.icons instead, KDE's icon manager didn't find them. Installing with the KDE icons manager or the GTK theme manager (via "Get More Themes" or "Install Theme File") for my user, not system-wide, will mean the other manager won't see them (incidentally, the "Get More Themes" > "Install local theme" and "Uninstall local theme" features offered in the the GTK theme manager don't work anyway).

Apart from that bit of wierdness, I'm delighted to say SolydK is now working for me better than any OS ever has. There used to be lots of minor issues with theme stuff (themes would reset if KDM was changed and other oddness) but this quirk seems to be the last one. :)

They all show here, but not all themes in /usr/share/themes. Some show, some doesn't.
