SolydX RPI2 [updated 07-06-2015]

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 15 Mar 2015 16:48

Now that the Raspberry PI 2 is out, I promised my son (8) he could have one. It's his first computer. He wants to learn to program and how to type.

I found that somebody already created a Debian Jessie image for the RPI2. The image was a perfect base for the SolydX RPI2: no DE, just the bare minimum.

I'm not going to support this but I'll make it available as a community edition.

You can download it here:
http://downloads.solydxk.nl/ce/rpi/soly ... img.tar.gz
MD5:
http://downloads.solydxk.nl/ce/rpi/soly ... tar.gz.md5

Note: this image cannot run on the RPI1!

Unpack and dd to an SD card of at least 4GB:

Code: Select all

sudo dd if=2015-04-21-solydxrpi2.img of=/dev/sdb bs=4M && sync
Where /dev/sdb is your (not mounted) SD card.

When you boot the first time, it will expand the rootfs to fully use the capacity of your SD. For about 10 seconds you will see nothing more than a blinking cursor after which your system will reboot.

You will find a launcher on the desktop to configure the system. Use that to expand the partition. That way, your entire SD will be used.

Root password: solydxk

There are some things that I haven't found out yet:
  • Build and package Kodi for RPI2.
  • I only get the text theme of Plymouth to work.
Don't forget to post back any findings (configuration wise, not any applications you'd like to have by default).

I've attached my notes.

I found that solydx-system-adjustments needs an update. However, it's the same version and you even get an error when you do so:
unable to make backup link of `./boot/grub/grubbg.png'
Which I don't understand at all...

Well, if you remove /boot/grub/grubbg.png before the upgrade, it'll update fine.

On a Pi? Bloody hell! Isn't that dog slow? I tried Raspbian on my Pi two years ago and I was horrified at how slow LXDE was (compared to RISC OS, the original ARM operating system). I can't imagine Xfce doing any better.

But I'm not going there. I've just about put RISC OS out to pasture after spending/wasting decades on it. I should have moved to Intel machines after my first computer (an Acorn BBC B), but I got stuck on ARM based computers until well after the demise of the company that invented them (the A in ARM stood for 'Acorn' originally).

It's slow, but my son doesn't mind. He's having his first computer.

I've updated the OP: SolydX only for the RPI2.
The previous version for the RPI1 was really to slow (even for me).

I've uploaded a new image (OP updated).
SolydX RPI2 now expands the rootfs on first boot and missing packages were added.

Another update and if I don't find any problems this will be the RC.
