Lightdm locker/greeter problem - laptop not waking up

Postby ilu » 12 Sep 2019 16:29

I've also forgotten a problem on some Dell laptops - after locking the screen the laptop turns unresponsive - might be https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=846278 and might be related to Intel graphics https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=110863.
Workaround: use a virtual terminal with alt-del-F1 and then switch back to alt-F7. Edit: works

I ran into this issue with a fresh install of SolydX 10 on an Asus laptop with Intel integrated graphics.

The solution suggested in https://wiki.debian.org/light-locker worked for me:
In '/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d', create the entry '20-intel.conf' containing

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Intel Graphics"
 Driver "Intel"
EndSection

Edit - this fix is specific to systems impacted by the Intel graphics bug that ilu referenced earlier.

But would it harm or interfere with systems that do not have intel chips?

If not, I could add the conf to the adjustments packages.

I should have noted more clearly that the fix that I used is specific to Intel systems.

The light-locker page that I linked to probably used Intel in the example code because the "not waking up" issue seems to have impacted Intel systems disproportionately. I am not knowledgeable enough to know how adding this file would affect non-Intel systems, unfortunately.

the bug is _specifically_ happened on intel chips. perhaps we should make this post as sticky so that every intel user could easily found this post.

Would incorporating something like this into the live installer work (code not tested):

Code: Select all

if [ ! -z "$(lspci -v | grep -i vga | grep -i intel)" ]; then
    mkdir -p /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
    cat > /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf <<EOF
Section "Device"
 Identifier "Intel Graphics"
 Driver "Intel"
EndSection
EOF
fi

personally I prefer to let the user did it by himself. newer intel chips doesn't have this issue. only older (hasswell or older??cmiiw) chips have this issue.

The user can decide after installation. We need a solution DURING installation. We can't expect the user to hit a key every 3 minutes to prevent the system/screen from going comatose. If that codeblock works to keep the device awake during install, I'm all for it - I just dont have a device to test it atm.
That should not be a permanent setting though.

I'm afraid it won't work. if I understand it correctly, that script is used to install the OS into storage media. perhaps my knowledge is too limited. AFAIK we simply load the installation media to the ram during the installation. modifying boot parameter might works but I don't know how to automatically change the boot parameter

else, simply set the power setting to never sleep during installation. not an ideal solution but certainly it's easier and pose no risk

I have updated the live installer (in the repository) but I haven't tested it, yet.

I have added this config file to the live environment:
/lib/live/config/0139-x11-intel-fix

This contains the code that I mentioned above (with some live config additions) and is run before X is started during the live session.

I'll test this later this week.

There was a bug in the script but it is fixed now.

live-installer-3 was updated and I have tested it on my laptop with Intel chipset. The config file was generated during boot before X was started. I didn't have time to check it it solves this problem, though. Hopefully others can test this out.

I'll update the nightlies with this version of live-installer-3.
